All-District and All-State Bands

Contact Person: Mrs. Norman,

Honors band schedules are listed on the WFR Band Calendar.

General Information

The North Carolina Central District All-District Band is made up of the finest high school student musicians from the central third of North Carolina. The North Carolina All-State Band is made up of the best high school student musicians in the state - the finest of the finest!

All student musicians at WFRHS are eligible to try out for the NC Central District All-District Band. Students selected for the All-District Band are then eligible to try out for the NC All-State Band. Meet with Mrs. Norman if you are interested in auditioning and she can help you prepare - you must audition for her before December in order to attend. Regular practice times will be scheduled in the band room for any student interested in auditioning - the days and times will be announced.

Auditions for both bands are individual performances that are done before a panel of judges. Each student performs a set of scales, a solo, and sight reads and performs a short selection. Judges grade each student on several qualities. The students with the highest cumulative score are then selected to participate in a clinic and concert. The intensive two-day clinic is run by a notable band director who works with the students to teach them advanced techniques and build their skills. The students perform a concert at the conclusion of the clinic. The results are nothing short of amazing, especially considering that these kids had never played together until just a few hours before!

Below are links to general information, audition scales, and the list of solos for each instrument (the same scales and solos are used for both the All-District and All-State auditions). Solo music books are available for purchase at local music stores or online.
