The Job Shadowing component pare of “Success, Inc. – Ensuring Future Success” gives students the opportunity to shadow someone in a career they have an in interest in. This is a one day field experience in which students visit a worksite and “shadow” a working person as they carry out their daily activities. Students learn about the necessary professional skills and educational requirements for success in this career field. The importance of school and doing well academically is stressed. Students also gain a valuable career reference who may be willing to serve as their internship mentor during their junior or senior year. This experience will also demonstrate initiative which is applealing to colleges and employers and will enhance their resume, portfolio, and high school transcript.
Job Shadowing will be scheduled on work days and vacation days to avoid having students missing instructional time. Only in rare cases will students be scheduled to job shadow on days which will take them out of the classroom setting. The necessary paperwork must be completed and the job shadowing site approved by the career development coordinator. Applications may be picked up in student services through Mr. Whitley, Career Development Coordinator, in Student Services.
Students are encouraged to take the first step by contacting a working person (who will serve as the mentor) and setting up a time with their career mentor for the day they will job shadow. The mentor information needs to be completed before turning in the information. Students who are unable to locate a mentor will be given guidance by Mr. Whitley in contacting job shadowing sites. Remember that every effort to schedule the job shadowing experience for a work/holiday must be made before a student will be given permission to be excused from class.
